In a recent appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” Pat McAfee discussed Patrick Mahomes leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LVIII and whether Mahomes is the biggest box office attraction in sports.
During Sunday night’s Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in a thriller that went to overtime.
McAfee cited Roman Reigns and other notable personalities in his response. He said,
“So I think it’s such a fascinating question, and I love the term ‘box office’ because that means business, and business is ultimately the root of everything. When you think of box office, I guess you gotta start thinking in the combat sports world. It’s like, okay, Roman Reigns, obviously ‘The Tribal Chief’ has got a thousand-something says as champion. Obviously, everybody’s watching, The Rock. Conor McGregor, lotta’ people want to see him potentially get knocked out. That’s big-time box office that he’s been able to do. Then you go over to the world of a man who has more followers than the population of the United States of America, a man who, I think the rest of the world would say is the biggest star on the earth and a man who got me actually to download an app to watch soccer. You think maybe Messi, maybe Messi’s the biggest box office hit in the entire athletic sphere. But then you have to wonder, has there ever been a man, and I guess in the NFL world, it’s the first time in the first seven seasons…one of the only people to have three championships, two MVPs. It’s like Patrick Mahomes had over 200 million people watching. Not only had a game-tying drive, but a game-winning drive in the biggest stage. I would say Patrick Mahomes is the biggest and best box office we have in the sports world, and he’s only getting started. He’s just 28 years old. Money is good around that man, and I think we’re lucky to have him.”

Patrick Mahomes has solidified his status as one of the biggest box office attractions in sports, according to former NFL player and current sports commentator Pat McAfee. In a recent appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” McAfee discussed Mahomes’ impressive performance in leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LVIII.
The Super Bowl LVIII matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers was an intense battle that went into overtime. Ultimately, Mahomes and the Chiefs emerged victorious, securing their third championship in the first seven seasons. This feat alone sets Mahomes apart as one of the most successful players in NFL history.
McAfee compared Mahomes’ box office appeal to other notable personalities in different sports. He mentioned Roman Reigns, a professional wrestler known as “The Tribal Chief,” who has garnered a massive following and draws significant attention to his matches. McAfee also highlighted Conor McGregor, a mixed martial artist, and Lionel Messi, a soccer player, as other box office draws in their respective sports.
However, McAfee argued that Mahomes surpasses them all. He pointed out that Mahomes had over 200 million viewers watching him during the Super Bowl LVIII. Not only did Mahomes lead his team on a game-tying drive, but he also orchestrated a game-winning drive on the biggest stage in football. McAfee emphasized that Mahomes’ accomplishments, including three championships and two MVP awards in just seven seasons, make him the biggest and best box office attraction in the sports world.
At just 28 years old, Mahomes is still in the early stages of his career. McAfee expressed excitement about what the future holds for the young quarterback. He noted that Mahomes’ popularity extends beyond the United States, with more followers than the country’s population. McAfee even admitted that Mahomes convinced him to download an app to watch soccer, highlighting the quarterback’s global appeal.

His impressive performances, numerous accolades, and massive viewership during the Super Bowl LVIII demonstrate his ability to captivate audiences worldwide. As Mahomes continues to excel on the field, his star power is only expected to grow, making him a valuable asset to the sports world.
