On a recent edition of his “Everybody’s Got A Pod” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase Sr. recalled Gene Okerlund and Bobby Heenan leaving WWE for WCW, and more.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On Gene Okerlund and Bobby Heenan leaving WWE for WCW in late 1993: “Yeah, I mean, because of them being established as they were. They were put in those positions because they were very good at that. They were good on a microphone. Oh, my gosh, Bobby Heenan, in terms of being a guy on the mic he was great. He was a great manager. I mean, that was really his gift. And I wouldn’t call him the greatest wrestler in the world, but he had feuds too in the whole managing gimmick. He was one of the hottest, most hated managers in wrestling. And yeah, I thought they did great personally.”
On his relationship with Madusa: “We were friendly. I mean, it wasn’t like bosom buddies or anything, but I thought she was pretty nice. I never heard anything horrible about her. What little time I was around her? I thought she was deserving.”

In the world of professional wrestling, there have been many iconic figures who have left a lasting impact on the industry. Two such individuals are Gene Okerlund and Bobby Heenan, who made a significant move from WWE to WCW in late 1993. WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase Sr. recently discussed their departure on his podcast, shedding light on their contributions and the reasons behind their decision.
Okerlund and Heenan were highly regarded for their microphone skills and charisma. They were known for their ability to captivate audiences with their witty banter and entertaining commentary. Okerlund, in particular, was recognized as one of the best interviewers in the business, with his distinctive voice and impeccable timing. Heenan, on the other hand, excelled as a manager, often playing the role of a villainous character that fans loved to hate.
According to DiBiase, Okerlund and Heenan’s departure from WWE was a significant loss for the company. Their established reputations and talents made them valuable assets, and their absence was felt by both the fans and the wrestlers themselves. DiBiase acknowledged that while Heenan may not have been the greatest wrestler in the world, his skills as a manager were unparalleled. He was able to generate genuine heat from the audience, making him one of the most despised figures in wrestling.
As for Okerlund, his departure marked the end of an era in WWE. His interviews and backstage segments had become synonymous with the promotion, and his absence left a void that was not easily filled. However, DiBiase expressed his belief that both Okerlund and Heenan thrived in their new roles in WCW. Their talents continued to shine, and they made a significant impact in their new environment.
In addition to discussing Okerlund and Heenan, DiBiase also touched on his relationship with Madusa (also known as Alundra Blayze). While he described their connection as friendly rather than close, he expressed his admiration for her and believed that she deserved the recognition she received.
