During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alex Shelley took some time off to work as a physical therapy clinician. He eventually made his return in September of 2021.
Speaking on a recent edition of “The Ten Count” podcast, Shelley explained why taking the time off was necessary as a safety precaution. He said,
“I just did what I had to do. At the time, pre-COVID, I was offered contracts from multiple companies and I probably would have signed one of them, but COVID happened. When I saw the entertainment industry take a hit, a pretty brutal hit, I thought this would be a poor time for me to put all my eggs in the entertainment basket.”
He continued, “So I was working as a physical therapy clinician at the time, and a lot of people needed help, that’s for sure. So our clinic stayed open throughout the pandemic. I worked all throughout the pandemic, and as regulations changed, as the COVID situation changed, my company basically mandated that we got vaccinated, but that was gonna take a period of time, and I had to cancel wrestling bookings because of that. It broke my heart to do so, but physical therapy was my livelihood, and I had patients to take care of, and I did what I had to do. So COVID was strange times for everybody.”
Alex Shelley will defend the TNA World Title against Moose at the Hard to Kill 2024 pay-per-view event this weekend.

However, he recently made his return to wrestling in September of 2021.
In a recent interview on “The Ten Count” podcast, Shelley discussed why he decided to take time off during the pandemic. He explained that before COVID-19, he had been offered contracts from multiple wrestling companies and was considering signing one of them. However, when he saw how the entertainment industry was severely affected by the pandemic, he realized it would not be wise to rely solely on wrestling for his livelihood.
Shelley made the decision to work as a physical therapy clinician during the pandemic because he believed it was necessary to help people in need.
