While Billy Gunn briefly worked as a singles wrestler in WWE, he never made it to the main event.
Speaking on a recent edition of his “Something To Wrestle With” podcast, WWE executive Bruce Prichard commented on why the former New Age Outlaws member never made it to the main event as a singles competitor in WWE, and more.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On why Billy Gunn didn’t get to the main event in WWE: “If you look at Billy Gunn, my God he’s a Greek god still to this day! He’s got all the tools and can do anything but for whatever reason, when push comes to shove, it’s just not there… I’ll say the same thing about Road Dogg! Dogg was much better as a tag team wrestler and you put those guys together and they made magic together, you take them apart and now part of that illusion is exposed.”
On Gunn’s struggles to find singles success in different characters like his ‘Mr. Ass’ gimmick: “We get Billy Gunn, DX, New Age Outlaws — I thought it fit and it was a good character for him, except I don’t even remember The One.”

Billy Gunn is a former professional wrestler who gained popularity as a member of the tag team known as the New Age Outlaws in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Despite his success as a tag team wrestler, Gunn never reached the main event status as a singles competitor in WWE. In a recent episode of the “Something To Wrestle With” podcast, WWE executive Bruce Prichard shed some light on why Gunn never made it to the top.
Prichard acknowledged that Billy Gunn possessed all the physical attributes and skills required to be a main event wrestler. He described Gunn as a “Greek god” and praised his abilities. However, Prichard noted that when it came down to it, something was missing. He also mentioned that the same could be said for Gunn’s tag team partner, Road Dogg. Prichard believed that both wrestlers were better suited for tag team competition, where they could create magic together. When separated and placed in singles competition, some of the illusion and chemistry between them was lost.
Gunn did have some attempts at finding success as a singles wrestler, including his “Mr. Ass” gimmick. Prichard admitted that while he thought the character fit Gunn well during his time with DX and the New Age Outlaws, he couldn’t even remember another character called “The One” that Gunn portrayed. This suggests that Gunn struggled to establish memorable and successful personas as a singles competitor.
Despite not reaching the main event status, Billy Gunn’s contributions to the wrestling industry should not be overlooked. He was a key member of one of the most popular tag teams in WWE history and played a significant role in entertaining fans during the Attitude Era.
In conclusion, while Billy Gunn had all the physical tools and skills to be a main event wrestler, he never reached that level of success as a singles competitor in WWE. The chemistry and magic he created with Road Dogg as part of the New Age Outlaws were unmatched, and their tag team success overshadowed their individual aspirations. Nevertheless, Gunn’s impact on the wrestling industry should not be forgotten, and he will always be remembered as a talented performer and a vital part of wrestling history.
