Mark Henry has shared what goes into his role behind the scenes in AEW and believes he is a wrestling ‘counselor’ more than a traditional coach.
On a recent edition of “The Kurt Angle Show” podcast, Henry shared how his current role in AEW differs from the traditional role of a coach. He said,
“I feel like I’m more of a wrestling counselor than a coach. I don’t teach them how. I want them to already know how. I teach them where you do it, when you do it, why you do it and I teach them how to think outside the box because that’s what Stu Hart did for me, and Leo Berke and Tom Prichard and Rip Rogers and Jim Cornette did for me.
“I enjoy the personal one-on-ones [with talent], the people I talk to every week. It’s working, and when you see what you do works, it’s gratifying. I sit back sometimes like, ‘Man I did that.’ And the kids, they smile. Action Andretti, every time he walks past me he [smiles], and I know what it means. He’s saying thank you.”
Henry debuted for AEW in 2021 after decades with WWE. In addition to being a ‘counselor’, the WWE Hall of Famer is a talent scout and analyst for Tony Khan’s promotion.

Mark Henry, the former WWE superstar, has opened up about his role behind the scenes in All Elite Wrestling (AEW). In a recent interview on “The Kurt Angle Show” podcast, Henry revealed that he sees himself more as a wrestling counselor than a traditional coach.

The wrestling legend expressed his enjoyment in having personal one-on-one sessions with the talent and seeing their growth. He finds it gratifying when he witnesses the techniques and strategies he has shared with them being successfully implemented in their matches. Henry mentioned Action Andretti, a young talent in AEW, who always smiles when he walks past him, indicating his appreciation for the guidance he has received.
In addition to his role as a wrestling counselor, Henry also serves as a talent scout and analyst for AEW. Since joining the promotion in 2021 after a long tenure with WWE, he has been actively involved in identifying new talents and providing valuable insights to enhance the overall product of AEW.
