CM Punk made his return to WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames 2023 following his unceremonious firing from AEW this past October.
Fightful Select is reporting that Punk’s termination from AEW was spearheaded by a committee that included Bryan Danielson.
Danielson was part of the three-person disciplinary committee due to his reputation as an “appropriate moral compass who exemplifies objectivity” and assumed the de facto head position in its proceedings.
AEW General Counsel Chris Peck and an unnamed attorney were the other two members of the committee, alongside Danielson.
Danielson served as the voice of the group and explained to the roster that the decision to fire Punk was a complex and difficult one.
Danielson reportedly considered his own friendship with Punk as well as the latter’s contributions to AEW.
The American Dragon recently tweeted a statement which he reportedly said directly at the announcement meeting:
“My dad always told me, ‘The right thing is often the hardest thing to do. It won’t always make the most money. It won’t always be the most popular. But it’s still the right thing.’”
According to several AEW sources, Punk is probably aware of Danielson’s role in the disciplinary committee, considering the number of Punk’s affiliates who attended the roster meeting.

During the disciplinary process, Danielson served as the voice of the group and explained to the roster that the decision to fire Punk was a complex and difficult one. He reportedly took into consideration his own friendship with Punk as well as the latter’s contributions to AEW.
In a recent tweet, Danielson shared a statement that he reportedly said directly at the announcement meeting: “My dad always told me, ‘The right thing is often the hardest thing to do. It won’t always make the most money. It won’t always be the most popular. But it’s still the right thing.'”
