On a recent edition of his “Tuesday with The Taskmaster” podcast, former WCW booker Kevin Sullivan explained how he’d book Sting’s upcoming retirement match slated for AEW Revolution 2024.
According to Sullivan, whoever defeats Sting in his retirement match will largely benefit from the victory.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On why Sting should lose his retirement match: “This is going to sound silly to a lot of wrestling fans. Did Ali win his last fight? Did he win his last two fights? If you want to start sucking people back to the other side, you can lose on the decision. I think in his last seven fights, he never got a knockout and it didn’t hurt him because people still remember him being Ali. Actually, it made him bigger than he was, because he came out of the dressing room, Parkinson’s, with a lot of health issues, but he gave it the ‘All-American’ try. ‘God bless him.’”
On why whoever Sting faces should win: “It really doesn’t matter [who wrestles Sting]. Whoever goes over, whether it’s Darby winning or somebody else, it’s going to raise the other guy’s popularity. Then when they go to embrace [Sting], there won’t be a dry eye in the house.”
Sting will team with Darby Allin and Adam Copeland against Christian Cage, Luchasaurus, and Nick Wayne at AEW Full Gear 2023.

Former WCW booker Kevin Sullivan recently shared his thoughts on how he would book Sting’s upcoming retirement match in AEW Revolution 2024. According to Sullivan, whoever defeats Sting in his retirement match will greatly benefit from the victory.
Sullivan compared Sting’s retirement match to the final fights of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. He mentioned that Ali didn’t win his last few fights, but it didn’t diminish his legacy. In fact, it made him even bigger because people still remember him as Ali, the legendary boxer. Sullivan believes that if Sting were to lose his retirement match, it would create a similar effect. Losing on the decision would not hurt Sting’s legacy, but rather enhance it because it would show his determination and resilience.
Sullivan also emphasized that it doesn’t matter who Sting faces in his retirement match. Whether it’s Darby Allin or someone else, the person who goes over and wins the match will see a significant boost in their popularity. The emotional moment of embracing Sting after the match will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the audience.
In the meantime, Sting will be teaming up with Darby Allin and Adam Copeland to take on Christian Cage, Luchasaurus, and Nick Wayne at AEW Full Gear 2023.
