Could Will Ospreay beat a bear in a fight? The reigning IWGP United Kingdom Heavyweight Champion isn’t confident he’d put up much of a fight.
On the “Battleground” podcast, Ospreay weighed up his chances in this imaginary match-up. He said,
“I think I could do a suplex on a bear, but then I think the bear would f**k me shortly after, But what type of bear is it? If it’s a polar bear, you’re f**ked; if it’s a brown bear, you might have a chance. If it’s a grizzly bear, that’s a bad bear. A black bear is kind of an ask to do it on as well. A koala bear easily, it depends on the bear.
“If we’re talking about panda movies or something like that, we get the killer shark all the time. We get the killer crocodile and wildlife. But a killer panda. that would be great.”
Wrestling bears were once a staple of the industry with Bobby Heenan, ‘Classy’ Freddie Blassie and Bob ‘Hardcore’ Holly all having claimed to have wrestled a bear.
Ospreay is set to defend his IWGP United Kingdom Heavyweight title (as well as the US version of the belt) against Shota Umino at NJPW Power Struggle next month.

In a recent podcast interview, Will Ospreay, the reigning IWGP United Kingdom Heavyweight Champion, discussed the hypothetical scenario of fighting a bear. While Ospreay admitted that he could potentially execute a suplex on a bear, he also acknowledged that the bear would likely overpower him soon after. However, he humorously pointed out that the outcome would depend on the type of bear. For instance, facing a polar bear would be extremely dangerous, while a brown bear might offer a slim chance of survival. Ospreay also mentioned that wrestling bears used to be a common spectacle in the industry, with notable wrestlers like Bobby Heenan and Freddie Blassie claiming to have engaged in such matches.
Despite the entertaining discussion about wrestling bears, Ospreay’s focus remains on his upcoming title defense at NJPW Power Struggle. He is set to defend his IWGP United Kingdom Heavyweight title against Shota Umino next month. This match will also determine the fate of the US version of the belt.

While Ospreay’s comments about fighting a bear were lighthearted and humorous, it’s important to note that engaging in such activities with wild animals is highly dangerous and unethical. Bears are powerful creatures that should be respected and observed from a safe distance in their natural habitats.
