WWE/Impact Hall of Famer Bully Ray isn’t a fan of the “you deserve it” chant from fans, believing wrestlers have to still prove themselves after earning opportunities.
During this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam, Eddie Kingston captured the ROH World Championship and received that chant from the fans in New York City.
On the fallout episode of “Busted Open Radio,” Ray addressed the fan chant and what he feels wrestlers should ‘deserve’ instead. He said,
“Nobody deserves a damn thing in pro wrestling – but I’ll be damned if Eddie Kingston has not earned the opportunity… Eddie has earned the opportunity, and the word ‘opportunity’ is a Vince McMahon word.
“There are no guarantees anywhere… what there is, is opportunities and the opportunity for you to earn a spot on the card to get yourself over. Eddie has been through lots of ups and downs in this business – probably more than most.”
This week’s victory marks Kingston’s first reign as ROH World Champion and saw the Mad King retain the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship.

In the world of professional wrestling, earning opportunities and proving oneself is a constant struggle. Fans often chant “you deserve it” when a wrestler achieves a significant milestone or accomplishment. However, WWE/Impact Hall of Famer Bully Ray believes that wrestlers should not feel entitled to such recognition and must continue to prove themselves even after earning opportunities.
During a recent episode of AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam, Eddie Kingston captured the ROH World Championship and received the “you deserve it” chant from the passionate fans in New York City. This chant is a way for fans to show their appreciation and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the wrestler. However, Bully Ray disagrees with this sentiment.
On the fallout episode of “Busted Open Radio,” Bully Ray expressed his thoughts on the fan chant and what he believes wrestlers should truly deserve. He stated, “Nobody deserves a damn thing in pro wrestling – but I’ll be damned if Eddie Kingston has not earned the opportunity… Eddie has earned the opportunity, and the word ‘opportunity’ is a Vince McMahon word.”
Bully Ray emphasizes that there are no guarantees in the wrestling industry. Wrestlers must seize the opportunities presented to them and work hard to earn their spot on the card and gain recognition. Eddie Kingston, in particular, has faced numerous ups and downs throughout his career, making his recent victory all the more significant.
Kingston’s triumph not only marked his first reign as the ROH World Champion but also saw him retain the NJPW Strong Openweight Championship. It is a testament to his perseverance and dedication to his craft.
The wrestling world is filled with talented individuals who constantly strive to prove themselves. While fans may chant “you deserve it” as a sign of appreciation, wrestlers like Bully Ray believe that recognition should be earned continuously. Opportunities are not handed out freely; they must be seized and capitalized upon.
As fans, we can appreciate the hard work and dedication of our favorite wrestlers, but it is essential to remember that their journey is ongoing. They must continue to prove themselves and earn their place in the industry. So, let us celebrate their achievements while also acknowledging the challenges they face and the effort they put into their craft.
