This past Wednesday’s edition of AEW Dynamite featured a brief backstage segment where Renee Paquette approached MJF to ask how he was feeling ahead of his title defense at Double or Nothing. Instead of verbally answering, the World Champion slapped the microphone out of her hands and walked away.
According to a report in the latest issue of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it didn’t play out as it was originally intended.
Dave Meltzer writes, “There was a promo segment involving everyone in the match and Britt Baker was involved. It ended with Baker saying that even if he wins, he’s not going to hold the title long, Bay Bay. The idea is that (Adam) Cole gets the next big title chase against whoever wins the match. But there was something about it that was deemed not good and instead of doing it again, they changed to what they did. Maybe the decision was not to let people know Cole was getting the next shot meaning people would figure MJF was winning, although everyone figures MJF is winning as there was 50-to-1 odds favoring him.”
The main event of Double or Nothing on May 28 will see MJF defend the AEW World Championship in a four-way match against Sammy Guevara, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry, and Darby Allin.
