John Cena is one of WWE’s biggest stars, but the 16-time World Champion allegedly felt threatened by other wrestlers with impressive physiques.
After his SmackDown debut in 2002, Cena would become WWE United States Champion in 2004 and would rise to the WWE Championship the following year.
During his run as U.S. Champion, Cena feuded with Dupree, who failed to dethrone Big Match John.
During a Q&A live stream of his podcast, Dupree was asked if Cena ever felt threatened by talent with physiques like his own.
“Very much so. Very much so. Yeah. The American with the Americans with muscular physiques and tall and good-looking, yep. 100%.”
Dupree, the youngest champion in WWE history at the time, was granted his requested release from WWE in July 2007.
In a 2021 interview with Chris Van Vliet, Dupree cited the Benoit double-murder-suicide the prior month as a factor that led to his requested release.
