Adam Cole has the potential to make a big splash with his next move, and now we know more details about how close he was to becoming a free agent this summer.
According to a report from Wrestling Inc, Cole’s deal was set to expire after SummerSlam this year, which was already an extension of his original deal that expired after NXT’s Great American Bash in July. Fightful Select is now reporting more details on the situation, explaining that there was a general assumption in the company that Cole’s deal would expire in December. It was noted that WWE sources reached out to Fightful and said they became aware of Cole’s deal expiring in July, and that many top people in the company only realized it shortly before the deal ran out.
Although Cole’s contract originally expired in July, it was said that Cole told WWE he was willing to work through SummerSlam and re-evaluate the situation at a later time. Despite sticking around for the extension, it’s unknown if Cole signed a short-term extension or just made a verbal agreement.
There was said to be a lot of “significant frustration and heat” within the company because Cole’s situation came to close to his deal expiring, but he was praised for being easy to work with and open to working things out rather than just leaving and potentially showing up somewhere else.
