Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael Battling ALS

Former NFL turned WCW star Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael needs everyone’s prayers as he recently revealed he’s been diagnosed with ALS.

The former Four Horsemen member was diagnosed in January with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), mostly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

McMichael spoke with Chicago Tribune’s Dan Wiederer, where he opened up about his battle with ALS.

“I promise you,” McMichael says, “this epitaph that I’m going to have on me now? This ain’t ever how I envisioned this was going to end. I want everybody to realize why they’re no longer going to see me around.”

“I thought I was ready for anything,” McMichael says. “But man. This will sneak up on you like a cheap-shotting Green Bay Packer.”

The 63-year old is known to wrestling fans as Mongo, where he worked in WCW as a commentator for WCW Nitro from 1995-1996, following his retirement from the NFL in 1994, where he won a Super Bowl in 1985 with the Chicago Bears.

McMichael also had brief stints in WWE and IMPACT Wrestling.
