Eddie Edwards ‘Expecting The Unexpected’ At Slammiversary, Aims To Leave As IMPACT World Champion

Eddie Edwards says it doesn’t matter who his opponents are this Saturday because he’s still in the main event and looks to walk away as the new IMPACT World Champion.

Edwards recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard ahead of IMPACT Wrestling’s Slammiversary pay-per-view this weekend. Edwards will compete in a four-person title match to crown a new IMPACT World Champion along with Trey, Ace Austin and a fourth mystery competitor.

The title picture has been a complicated one, as Trey initially won a number one contender’s tournament for a singles match. The match was then announced as a five-way, but Tessa Blanchard was stripped of the championship and fired, while Michael Elgin was pulled from the match and will not be appearing in any further Impact Wrestling programming, according to a company statement. Edwards, a former TNA World Champion himself, says despite all of the changes, it doesn’t matter who the mystery competitor is because he’s only focused on winning the match any way he can.

“You know, for me it’s the main event, it’s for the World Championship, so my mentality has stayed the same. Everyone that’s a part of Slammiversary, part of IMPACT, we all have the same goal—we all want to tear it up and steal the show, have great matches and win. For me, that’s the same mindset. Obviously the match has changed so it throws a temporary wrench into the plans but no matter what,” Edwards said, “my game plan is going to be the same. I’ll go out there and win, leave it all out there.

“As far as the mystery opponent, obviously it’s a mystery and we don’t know, but I’m not one of those guys that gets overly concerned about it. It’s going to happen, I can’t control it,” Edwards said, “I can’t control who it is or who it’s not. I’ll be in the ring and the music will hit and I’ll be prepared at that moment. I’m going to do my best to not drive myself crazy with who it could be or couldn’t be.”

When asked if there’s anyone he doesn’t want it to be, Edwards said he really is prepared for anyone and welcomes the surprise.

“I’m open to anybody, I’m excited for it. I’m looking forward to how surprising it could be. I’m ready for anybody, it’s an open-door policy here in IMPACT Wrestling.”

What about Moose, the “real” TNA World Champion and his sometimes friend-turned-foe? Edwards says he loves beating Moose up and they compliment each other very well, but whoever it is won’t just be someone thrown in a match. Whether they are on the roster or a new signee, Edwards says anyone in the match will have earned that spot.

“Moose? I would love for Moose to be the guy because I enjoy beating the hell out of Moose. He’s my friend but I’d love to kick the crap out of him and I know we bring the best out of each other. Whoever it’s going to be is going to be rightfully in that spot because it is the main event for the World Championship, so they aren’t going to just throw anybody in there all willy-nilly, you know what I mean?” Edwards said. “It’s going to be someone that IMPACT feels like they deserve a shot. It could be anybody, from outside of IMPACT or [on the roster now]. I’m expecting the unexpected.”

Even with the mystery of the other opponent, IMPACT has also been teasing a recent WWE name coming over in the form of their cryptic “future endeavored” promos. It has already been teased that multiple people cut by WWE in April are heading to IMPACT and Edwards says it’s a good thing to see IMPACT as a destination for free agents. He says it’s a good sign to have people talking about the promotion in a positive way and it’s also good that

“I think there’s a lot of guys out there that were released from other companies that could definitely add their own flavor to IMPACT. I think it just shows the positive way that IMPACT is going right now where IMPACT is a destination and it can be and should be.

“As far as speaking personally, it’s a great place to work and I love being part of IMPACT Wrestling, and I look forward to seeing who is coming in. EC3 is a friend of mine and I would love to see him back; not only because I’m selfish and want my friend back but also because of how much he did before when he was part of IMPACT, the character he was. I think he can add a lot. You see these clips, the vignettes, and you think of Gallows and Anderson who haven’t been a tag team here before, and we have people coming in whether they’re past or present, I think it’s just a good sign. I’m glad it’s getting people talking again,” Edwards said. “That’s a good thing that no one is overly confident about who they think is going to show up because there’s a lot of possibilities.
