In a recent edition of his “83 Weeks” podcast, Eric Bischoff gave insights on how Alex Wright potentially missed his chance to become a notable figure in WCW.
Here’s a recap of some crucial points from the podcast:
Bischoff shed light on the fact that Ric Flair played a significant role in persuading Alex Wright to sign with WCW. He recounts, “Presumably, he arrived for his tryout match, awed the right people. And it is my belief that Ric Flair was one of his loudest supporters at that point in time. I recollect Ric having high expectations for Alex Wright and the possibilities he held. Therefore, if Ric wasn’t the one who decided to bring him onboard, he must have played a key role in the decision.”
Regarding Wright’s potential wasted in WCW, Bischoff expressed his sympathy, saying, “I genuinely feel remorse for him. I yearn to cross paths with Alex at some point in the future, only for some empathetic conversation. Because he was filled with promise. Had he moved to WWE? Perhaps it might have been a bit late in ’99 for him. But I believe he would have evolved into an enormous star. Assuming Columbine hadn’t occurred, he would surely have grown into an immense star. Since that character Berlin seemed promising, and Alex was capable of portraying that character.”
Bischoff also reflected, “You have hit the nail on the head. In this instance — unfortunate timing indeed. He’s the quintessential example of poor timing… Considering his appearance, abilities, skills, and what he brought to the ring? Without a doubt, he’d be the primary face on that Mt. Rushmore of ‘What might have been.’ He is not just significant in the context of WCW, but in all of wrestling.”
