In a recent episode of his podcast, ‘The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy’, pro-wrestler Matt Hardy discussed the significant impact of Kurt Angle’s departure from WWE for TNA, as well as his thoughts on Angle’s retirement match, among other subjects.
Here are some key points highlighted in the podcast:
Discussing Kurt Angle moving from WWE to TNA, Hardy remembered how transformative this was, “I distinctly recall how monumental his first appearance was, emerging from the brood entrance. It was a fantastic turn for TNA then, as it helped amplify the visibility of the company. I was hopeful that this would create additional opportunities for wrestlers, allowing them an alternate space to work and earn a good living from professional wrestling. Kurt’s presence was unquestionably going to facilitate this. Of course, Kurt is a gifted individual who was producing phenomenal work, and my hope was always for his wellbeing outside of his character.”
When asked whether it was the correct decision for Angle to face Baron Corbin in his final match, Hardy replied, “I can’t say for sure. If Kurt was agreeable, then that’s fine by me. It would have been amazing for Kurt to exit on a high, perhaps having a match against a top-tier superstar at the time and letting them win. That would be a spectacular send-off.
However, if Kurt was content with the arrangement and his intention was to elevate someone as he exited the ring, then that needed to be respected. I believe that was Vince’s idea. Looking back, I’m not sure if that was the best approach, but what’s done is done. We should appreciate the moments we have. I don’t have many criticisms. Could his farewell match have been better? Possibly. But we navigate according to the circumstances we face.” Here’s the video from the podcast for more context: [Link to the video].
