As those familiar with the story are aware, there were severe repercussions for Triple H in the aftermath of the infamous “Curtain Call” episode that took place in 1996. On that particular occasion, Triple H, along with Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, breached kayfabe and shared a group hug in the ring after a house show match at Madison Square Garden.
During a dialogue with radio show ‘Greg & The Morning Buzz’, the Chief Creative Officer of WWE recounted his exchange with McMahon regarding the event.
Below are some notable points from this interview:
Discussing the punishment he received due to the incident, Triple H said: “It was a significant incident. I bore the brunt of the backlash because I was the only one who could. Kevin and Scott were set to leave. Shawn was the reigning world champion, so there was not much they could do to him. I accepted the blame willingly.”
On the conversation he had with McMahon following the fallout: “On my way out of Vince’s office, after a severe reprimand, I turned to him and asked, ‘Vince, if lifting this so-called curtain is such a big error, then why was it that it generated the loudest cheers at Madison Square Garden that night? The house was packed. The reaction was unprecedented. The industry is evolving, and some people are failing to grasp it.’ His response was, ‘You may have a point, but that doesn’t change the state of things currently. The punishment stands.’ That’s the reality. The industry was changing. Fast forward to the advent of the internet, and everyone knows our behind-the-scenes like who’s married to whom, who’s in relationships, or at least they assume they do. A lot of the information on the internet is incorrect, but it’s out there and the fans are in on how the system works.”
