The upcoming eWrestlingNews Question of the Day centers around AEW’s decision to bring back its ‘Winter is Coming’ special TV episode on December 11, 2024, hosted at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Intriguingly, while AEW has opted out of running many of its usual specials throughout the year, this particular special has been resurrection.
Past notable events that have been missing from the roster include Beach Break, St. Patrick’s Day Slam, Road Rager, Fyter Fest, Fight for the Fallen, as well as one-offs such as Quake by the Lake. On the other hand, AEW has concentrated on shows like Grand Slam, Royal Rampage, Title Tuesday, and Homecoming. We’re still in the dark about whether Holiday Bash or New Year’s Smash will reappear, with no announcements made and the chance for them to make the calendar diminishing.
The burning question today is, “How do you feel about significant specials like Fyter Fest and Fight for the Fallen being sidelined?” Make sure to drop your opinions in the comments.
Sharing my personal thoughts, I am appreciative of AEW fine-tuning its shows in tandem with contemporary wrestling events. An instance of this can be seen with Big Business, which served as a stellar promotional vehicle for Mercedes Mone, a role that would not have been fulfilled by renaming it Beach Break.
However, the replacement of Fyter Fest and Fight for the Fallen, particularly being two of AEW’s initial and most well-recognized shows, feels off. It appears to demonstrate a deliberate move to exclude these shows, which seems surprising.
These decisions make me wonder if Tony Khan or WBD specifically decided against these couple of shows, or disliked the names. After all, Fyter Fest was merely a jest directed at Fyre Fest. How many people today would even relate to the joke? Moreover, with ‘Fight for the Fallen’, it could simply be a reluctance to organize a charity event under that name without proceeding to donate, fearing a negative backlash.
I must admit, I don’t find many of AEW’s event names appealing. Titles like Dynasty, Wrestle Dream, and Winter is Coming lack the punch. But then again, it’s not like WWE has nailed every name either, considering examples like ‘Spring Breakin’. Though I’m fine with the absence of Fyter Fest, the logic behind discontinuing it stokes curiosity, even if it was simply forgotten due to lack of interest.
