Wrestling legend Bully Ray has shared his perspective on the practice of returning for a victory lap match to cap off careers.
Recently, it has become commonplace for wrestlers to punctuate their professional journeys with a final bout, a notable instance being Ric Flair’s widely criticized swansong in the summer months of 2022.
Ray voiced his thoughts on this matter during an episode of the “Busted Open Radio” podcast, focusing on the retiring personalities who desire a fairytale ending. His words were:
“If you are an experienced professional in this industry and you feel the need to make a comeback for one last duel to take control of your career’s narrative, I see no issue. However, if you are such a veteran who feels compelled to return for one last showdown simply to secure a win, then I must express my regret. You’ve lost track of your motivation—it’s rooted in ego.”
Furthermore, Ray chatted about Goldberg’s projected retirement showdown scheduled for 2025, elaborating on possible catalysts behind that choice. He added:
“Whilst I’m not implying that Goldberg’s decision to return to the ring stems from a need to retrieve a victory in his final match, if that holds true for any performer, it’s a manifestation of ego. It shouldn’t be this way. There’s an established protocol within this industry. It’s possible to bow out on a high note, even while stepping aside for someone else on your way out.”
On the latest WWE NXT episode, Bully Ray partnered with Trick Williams. However, they did not emerge victorious against Ridge Holland and Ethan Page.
