In a recent podcast, Charles “The Godfather” Wright delved into the origins of his famous ‘Papa Shango’ gimmick from his early days in WWE. He revealed that the creative inspiration behind the character came from none other than James Bond.

Wright was a guest on the “Insight with Chris Van Vliet” podcast where he reminisced in detail about the conversations with Vince McMahon that led to the creation of the ‘Papa Shango’ character.

Key highlights from the conversation are presented below:

Wright shared McMahon’s explanation about the birth of the ‘Papa Shango’ character : “Once Vince had hired me, he mentioned, ‘You’ve got the physique of a brute, but your face has an innocent appeal.’ Then one day he asked me to watch the movie ‘Live and Let Die.”

In regards to why he eventually let go of the ‘Papa Shango’ character, he disclosed that personal problems regarding his divorce were to blame. “I was embroiled in numerous physical altercations and it was reaching a point where ‘Taker had to intervene and hold me back. The situation was escalating to potentially dangerous levels. I had a discussion with Vince and Mark and we all agreed that it would be best if I took some time off to sort out my personal life before things escalated further”, mentioned Wright.
