During the Attitude Era, American adult entertainment businesses invited WWE to incorporate their stars into the matches, as detailed by Charles ‘The Godfather’ Wright.

In an exclusive “Ask Me Anything” session on AdFreeShows.com, Wright gave some intriguing insights into the origin of his famous Godfather persona. His comment was,

“WWE did not have a direct role in the creation of ‘The Godfather’. It was a combined effort of my wife and me, although she did most of the work. We took it for a test run, and I along with Bradshaw, practiced it at house shows. The first time Vince heard about it was when we brought it on TV, his response was, ‘Charles, I have a feeling this might work.”

The character quickly captured the hearts of fans, and strip clubs began to flood WWE with requests. Wright further comments,

“The task of selecting the girls fell on Bruce and several other guys, and they seemed to enjoy their job. It reached a point where strip clubs began to reach out to WWE directly, requesting the use of their girls when the event was in town. Upon my arrival, I would usually find anywhere between four to seven girls, and the length of my segment determined how many girls I would have with me.”

Wright mentioned that there were instances when he had to choose a select group of ‘girls’ from larger numbers. He ensured that all were compensated, even those who didn’t make it on TV.

While playing the popular Godfather, Wright had other WWE personas – Kama the Fighting Machine and the spell-casting Papa Shango.
