In a fresh conversation with WREG, as part of promotional activities for the first WWE NXT show on The CW Network tonight, wrestling superstar CM Punk shared his insights on the real position of NXT in the wrestling world, his personal connection to the brand, and more. Here are some highlight comments from his interaction:
When asked about his feelings for WWE NXT, Punk stated, “Being part of NXT lets me revisit my time in OVW and appreciate aspects that my earlier career-obsession didn’t allow. I now have the opportunity to relish the present.”
Discussing the significance of NXT, he said, “Many would agree that NXT is the breeding ground for future stars of SmackDown, RAW, and WrestleMania. However, I believe NXT is unique. NXT has something exceptional, and I hope they keep basking in the current glory while spending time there.”
Adding to this commentary, WWE NXT head Shawn Michaels made an interesting comparison between NXT and American football during a recent chat on “The Ringer Wrestling Show,” expressing, “NXT is to WWE what NCAA is to NFL. Just like NCAA’s appeal, NXT has potential to draw large crowds regularly. However, I personally wish to maintain its exclusivity. Home is always Florida for us and the environment here is unparalleled. We can create experiences here that are not possible elsewhere in other wrestling brands. This gives us the flexibility of enjoying some of the features offered by the Orlando region that would be difficult to find at different arenas nationwide. NXT’s growth is inevitable and desirable, but I would prefer not to venture outside of home too frequently. This is NXT’s roots and where it should continue to evolve.”
