Welcome to today’s eWrestlingNews Debate!
The discussion continues as Jey Uso just emerged as an authentic “main event” star following his triumph over Bron Breakker last night on Monday Night Raw. He clinched the Intercontinental Championship, landing his maiden singles title in WWE.
I’m excited to see how he’ll dominate his new championship reign, despite my initial disappointment about Bron Breakker’s short stint. As per tradition, whenever a new champion is crowned, I look forward to forecasting the next champion.
So, today’s debate question is: “Who is most likely to dethrone Jey Uso to become the next Intercontinental champion?”. Share your views in the comments section below!
As for me…
I resonate with the disappointment that Breakker’s reign was cut short. As such, my first inkling is to hope for a comeback. However, I prefer stability in title reigns and am impressed by Jey Uso’s stint so far. This tight spot has me hoping for some filler reigns before the title goes back to Breakker.
In guessing the title’s next bearer, it’s almost tempting to think Uso will maintain the title until WrestleMania. However, I’d prefer to see Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa lose the WWE Tag Team Championships to the reunited Usos rather than have Jey lose the Intercontinental Championship to Solo Sikoa or Jacob Fatu. Given that The Bloodline is on SmackDown, I’m leaning more towards the red brand’s stars being the next title bearers.
Taking Breakker out of the equation for a moment, names that pop into my mind are Drew McIntyre, Bronson Reed, Ludwig Kaiser, Dominik Mysterio, Chad Gable, Xavier Woods, and possibly Karrion Kross, although I find him less convincing.
From this list, Kross seems unlikely as he doesn’t get a consistent push. McIntyre might seem like a demotion, while Kaiser playing second fiddle to Gunther doesn’t help his cause. Woods might have a single title quest, but they might set him up for failure.
Now, considering Reed, Mysterio, and Gable, I lean more towards Mysterio or Reed, with Gable lacking momentum.
Reed might continue making waves without the title, being a behemoth in the ring. However, I fear his run might come to an end once Seth Rollins returns, thus pushing Reed back to midcard. I don’t see him defending the belt in such circumstances.
In contrast, Dominik’s character and overdue single title might give him the edge. Following the drop of Liv Morgan’s Women’s World Championship, Dirty Dom might clinch this belt, albeit as a short-term transitional champion. This transition would allow WWE to roll out their plans for the major shows.
With the limited time to process these thoughts and without knowing WWE’s future plans, my prediction is that Dominik dethrones Jey and loses the title to either Sheamus or Damian Priest. These two would then lose the title back to Breakker in 2025’s WrestleMania.
