Signed, sealed, and delivered – The Ring General and King of the Ring, Gunther, acclaimed as the most enduring intercontinental and UK champions in the annals of WWE, has procured another feather in his cap. He overpowered Damian Priest to seize the World Heavyweight Championship title during the action-packed WWE SummerSlam 2024 held in Cleveland.
Prior to the SummerSlam saga, Gunther didn’t mince his words about Priest, belittling him firmly as a common street thug, and someone who did not deserve the honor of retaining a title as esteemed as this one.
To everybody’s surprise, Priest rose to the challenge and managed to bring a rigorous fight to Gunther. The match, some would argue, would have tilted in Priest’s favor if it hadn’t been for the shocking betrayal by Finn Balor. The climax of the night played out with Balor thwarting a pinfall by placing Gunther’s foot on the ropes, betraying Priest in an apparent attempt to sabotage Priest’s victory.

This SummerSlam shall be imprinted in WWE history as the cataclysmic dissension of The Judgment Day, more specifically, when Rhea Ripley and Damian Priest were expelled from the group and met a harsh fate in their title matches. This night also marked the start of Gunther’s reign as the champion. Judging by his previous records, it’s anybody’s guess when he might hand over the coveted gold to a new champion!
