Professional WWE wrestler Shelton Benjamin recently discussed some of the previously undisclosed concepts considered for his character following his 2016 return to WWE. Despite signing a new contract, he didn’t make an appearance on television until the next year, where he played Chad Gable’s associate, replacing Jason Jordan.
During an exclusive interview with Metro UK, Benjamin revealed some initial plans that WWE had for him but were later vetoed. He shared,
“Upon my second return, one of the ideas pitched was for me to serve as a bodyguard to Paige (now known as Saraya in AEW), who was the Smackdown general manager at the time. The storyline direction was set to veer towards romance. Although the plot was primed to proceed, it ultimately didn’t take off.”
“Another concept was for me to assume the role of Mr. Entertainment and showcase my singing prowess. This idea was slightly hinted at in a scene with the Bella twins, where I sang a Louis Armstrong number. Vince McMahon himself wanted me to transform into Mr. Entertainment, but that plan also fell through.”
Benjamin, however, received his release papers from WWE in September 2023. This event coincided with the first talent cut wave following the UFC merger and the introduction of the TKO Group Holdings.
