At an AEW afterparty, a significant social event including Cody Rhodes, Matt Cardona, Tony Khan, the AEW President, and other members from the roster was held when Cardona made shocking comments that caught Rhodes off guard.
Their discussion surrounded the potential addition of Cardona to AEW as a part of Rhodes’ team. However, the presence of other members on the roster heightened the awkwardness of the situation.
On “The Major Wrestling Figure” podcast, Cody expressed his perspective regarding the meeting and the possibility of Cardona joining the AEW.

Discussing the idea of Matt Cardona becoming a part of his tag team at AEW, Rhodes said, “I had asked Matt if he wanted to team up with me. We planned about doing something together, like three or five shows. It wasn’t a long-term project, but I wanted him on board. He and WWE had split at that moment, and he was a free agent. He has a specific audience who follows him anywhere. He’s an entrepreneur. He takes care of his people. It was beneficial for both sides for him to join.”
Rhodes shared how he initiated a meeting between Matt Cardona and Tony Khan at an AEW afterparty. He stated, “I arranged a meeting between Matt and Tony. Given the COVID-19 scenario and the afterparty ambiance, this was the best I could manage. I guess we should have met Matt somewhere else like at his place or an office somewhere.”
Rhodes also discussed Cardona’s anticipation of a private meeting, stating, “He was right to expect that the meeting would be private. But the meeting became unintentionally public, making the atmosphere extremely awkward. His nervousness was palpable. However, I trusted my friend completely.”
Speaking about the initial confrontational moment between Tony Khan and Matt Cardona, Rhodes said, “When Tony began to speak, Matt interrupted him and said, ‘I don’t want to be here as Cody’s friend. I wouldn’t be seen in a Nightmare Family jacket.’ Tony being such a nice guy responded with an ‘Okay.’ We sat there for probably another hour, with nothing substantial being discussed which ripped me apart.”
