In a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, Matt Hardy shared insights into his expansive career. The TNA wrestler explained how key it has been to continuously reinvent himself throughout his career.
During the conversation, Hardy mentioned that evolution and change are crucial in the sphere of professional wrestling. “Yeah, I mean, in pro wrestling, things have to change,” Hardy admitted. He added that in akin to TV shows such as “Breaking Bad” and “Dexter”, there comes a point when change is needed, especially in maintaining the interest of audiences.
He went on to say, “Dexter had been eight seasons, and the first time it ended, people weren’t very happy with the ending. And then they did Dexter: New Blood.” He emphasized the challenge of keeping a character fresh even after years of development and compared that to professional wrestling.
“We’re 32 years deep into this; you have to be able to change the character so that it’s different because just like one consistent character can’t really be interesting enough to tell this many different stories in this, that and the other thing,” the wrestler added.
Hardy also highlighted the importance of the entertainment aspect stating, ” I’m a big fan of that now more than in-ring wrestling, obviously.”
Discussing his integration of internet elements into his wrestling persona, such as the “Matt Facts”, Hardy expressed his pleasure in doing that. He referred back to the “Broken Matt” angle as an attempt to create an over-the-top supernatural character, mirroring past elements such as those employed by Papa Shango and The Undertaker.
He concluded, saying that it was a joy to tie in things that he liked into his character and experiment with what direction he could take the character in.
